    Power Supply

I just installed a new power supply in my computer today. My original bad one had about 3 SATA power connectors. I only need 2. I have my hard drive powered up obviously, but the two connectors on the new PSU are too close together to reach.

Is it possible to cut one of the connectors off, and lengthen the wires a little so that it will reach my CD drive? I know I can physically do it, but it wouldn't cause any problems would it? I could see if it was transferring data, but surely it won't hurt power would it?

    Thanks,

    Joey

Sure, if you're up for the soldering job. (Maybe too small for wire nuts.)

I'd probably prefer to use one of the Molex connectors plus an adapter, if you have both (and the cable for the old-style connectors are longer than the SATA ones).

Yup. Like bobkn says, an adapter is better. It's the same power, and you don't have to cut anything, which will void your PSU's warranty.

I was kind of thinking about that too, I was just looking at both options.

I wonder if Radio shack might have something like that? I guess if not newegg will.

    Local is good.

Newegg charges more for the shipping than for the part.

Luckily, I found what I need at a radio shack close by, they have a Molex to SATA adapter so I'm going to pick it up on the way home from work tomorrow.
