Can I pick your brains on a new ssd with slow performance

    Hi guys/gals

I received a brand new corsair F120 today together with a xfx 850pro psu and thermaltake frio for my father in laws PC.

The rest of the spec is -

    i7 860
    Asus P7P55D-E
    4gb G.skill ripjaws 1600
    HD 6870

Anyway I did the fresh build , reinstalled windows 7 and it seemed to be running ok.

But then I ran WEI to check the score for the SSD , I have the F60 version and it scores 7.7 , I assumed the F120 would be similar , perhaps a little lower due to me having the very latest spec mobo etc but it scored a measly 7.2 which set the alarm bells ringing.

I ran a quick test on Passmark performance test next , my F60 scores 1800 , the new F120 scored 900 which is pretty close to what a regular HDD scores.

It showed the read and write speed both being less than 100MB/s? Whats going on? This should be at least 200 right?

Before installing windows I made sure it was set up as AHCI mode and its definately connected to the 6gb/s sata port.

I ran out of time today so I didnt have time to run any other benchmarks on it.

Any idea's before he comes round again tomorrow for me to look at it?

    Cheers

    Paul.

Well I got it sorted in the end.

Seems although I had set the main section of storage to AHCI mode , there is a separate section for the Jmicron sata ports that the solid state drive was connected to.

    That was set to IDE.

Changed it to AHCI and performance has gone up 30 to 40 %

    Happy days.

    Thanks for posting this.
I'm just about to switch from SATA rotating HDD to SSD and was wondering if the controller should be set to AHCI or IDE for best performance. Now I know.

One question, why are you using the JMicro ports for the SSD?
Wouldn't it be better on one of the standard/main SATA ports?

I have the Asus P7P55D-E Pro board with a i5 760 and until I fill up all the standard/main ports I would never use the JMicro port. And even if I filled up the 6 standard ports I'd go to the Marvell 6GB ports.

That SSD should get speeds of 285MB/s read and 275MB/s write.

The F120 is SATA II, I would put it on the Intel controller it should be faster than the [EDIT]JMicron(these are eSATA ports) Marvell. Get the latest Intel RST drivers.

Did you point win7 installer at the unformatted, new, out of the box SSD?
Win7 will align it correctly, which is important for SSDs. Win7 will also change several settings for SSDs, so there isn't too many tweaks left to do.
There are a few that will help the performance.

You can check the alignment, FW, driver, with AS SSD benchmark. You don't have to run the benchmark, just open it and in the top left corner you will see the info.
    Brand Name
    FirmWare version

Alignment, Green font means aligned, Red font means not aligned
    Total useable space

Let us know if your getting the full performance out of that nice SSD.

    @Shootist, use AHCI it's better.
    Which SSD?
The Intel controller ports are the ones to use with the RST driver.

Hi bud , maybe I am getting the Jmicron and marvell ports mixed up.

On that motherboard it has 6 regular 3GB/s sata ports (blue) iirc
    1 black sata
then 2 grey 6GB/s sata ports halfway up the mobo , I connected the ssd to one of these grey ones.

Anyway there was another setting in the advanced section of the bios to do with the controller for these ports and that was set to IDE , I changed that to AHCI and that seemed to do the job.

    Cheers

    Paul.

    Blue is reg ports
    Black is the JMicro
    Grey is Marvell 6GB

But even then I don't think the SSD drive run at the 6GB speed. Whatever as long as it is working for U.

Hi Dave , so are you saying it should run a bit quicker connected to a regular sata port as apposed to a marvel port then?

I will certainly give this a try if thats the case.

This depends totally on the controller. I went from IDE to AHCI and back again a few times and on my Intel controllers I noticed no tangible proof that either was faster. My HDTune scores were the same, my WEI scores were the same and my stopwatch timed tests were the same.

Well yesterday I switched from IDE to AHCI and really didn't notice any real difference myself.
The only thing that really changed was now in Disk Management my drive are listed in reverse order. what was drive 2 is now drive 0, drive 1 is still drive 1 and my boot C:\ partition and D:\ partition are listed as drive 2.
And that I now have the Safely Remove icon in the notification area all the time listing all my internal HDD.

This is with SATA rotating HDD.

When I get home from work today I'm going to switch it back to IDE and make the change in the registry.

Have read this on many forums but, haven't tried the Marvell ports on my mobo.
Since your SSD is SATA II, I would use the Intel SATA II ports.

A lot of people are waiting for Marvell to improve their controller FW and drivers.
