eSata Newb Question

Hi, there

My HP lappy (vista) has an eSata port on the side and so tonight I bought an eSata card for my custom build (win7). Plugged it in etc, it automagically installed the drivers. I then connected the eSata cable into the back of the custom build and then into my lappy.

From there I'm not sure what to do, I assumed it'd pop up in My Computer like any other drive would normally. Am I missing a step? Do I need to configure something in BIOS?

PS, I tried using the drivers that came with the eSata card, they screwed up my whole computer, had to use the startup recovery utility to just boot windows.

I seems you are attempting to use that eSATA connection as a network link between your laptop and your desktop. While this is technically feasible, eSATA is not directly supported as a networking link. The eSATA connection on your laptop, and now your desktop via that adapter, is for connecting an external eSATA hard drive or optical drive only.

As I said, it's technically feasible, as it would be with any high speed line. You'd have to write your own drivers and protocol stack. I suggest a $4 Ethernet cross-over cable instead. :)

Gah.. really should do my research before I buy... oh well, I might still have a use for this - maybe if I get a raid array?

Any ideas on if I could get it to work like the way that I want, on a network?
