Desktop freezes in Windows 7 Enterprise

I'm running Windows 7 Enterprise 32 bit and I'm not sure what's going on, but sometimes my desktop would just freeze and I would have to log off or restart to have a responsive desktop again. when my desktop freezes, I can still move my mouse around fine. The only thing that doesn't work is things on my desktop background. I can't click on icons or right click on the desktop. I usually just click on start and then log off then log back on but I'm getting tired of doing this. anybody have any solutions?

Is there some type of common thread (time it takes to freeze, recent actions performed) or is it completely random where it just happens out of the blue? Additionally, did it start recently or a while ago? If recently, try a system restore.

It's been happening awhile now...I usually leave my computer on 24/7 so I'm not even sure when it occurs... I surf the web and leave my browsers up and when I need something on my desktop I go and access it and it doesn't respond so it happens randomly. I don't know if it has to do with windows explorer or not.
