rite now I have this drive

WD Scorpio Blue 160 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD1600BEVS )

I am planning to upgrade to this one..

WD Scorpio Blue 640 GB SATA Hard Drives ( WD6400BPVT )

everything is same except SATA 1.5Gb/s and 3 Gb/s..

    Is it possible to upgrade?

Does your Motherboard have SATA2 ports?

    They are backwards compatable.
Meaning, if you have only 1.5Gb/s ports, the new drive will run at that speed rather than the 3.0 its capable of.

If this is the case, you may need to swap a Jumper from 3.0 to 1.5Gb/s. It depends on the drive.

Beyond that, theres no reason I can think of it wouldn't work.

    Yes it is possible.

According to Speccy you already have a SATA2 port.

The new drive should work right out of the box.

Keep in Mind, you may want to either:
    1) Image your entire HD to a external source
    2) Backup only the DATA you want to keep and do a clean instal of 7.

If you are not having any issues with your system, I would Image the entire drive or clone it to the new drive.

The speed at which they operate.

    SATA1 operates at 1.5Gb/s
    SATA2 operates at 3.0Gb/s

SATA2 devices will work on SATA1 ports. It appears you have SATA2 ports though.

You can go with a SSD, but keep in mind SSDs are much more expensive per GB of storage.

Ideally, a SSD for the OS and all your applications is a good idea with a secondary spinning drive for storage. (For things such as Music, Pictures, Video etc)

If this is a laptop, and space is the concern, the 640GB drive might be your best bet.

SSDs are certainly much faster, theres no doubt. But for a laptop that can only hold 1 HD, storage space may very well be a issue.
Even 256GB SSDs are quite pricey.

I see no real difference in SATA and SATA2. May be just some speed improvement. May be.
