Signs of a bad SSD

My step-dad's laptop had its hard drive replaced over a year ago with a solid-state drive, which I did the replacing. Now the laptop will not detect the drive, after it had been working fine.

My question is: does this indicate a corrupted drive or a ssd that has died? And typically what are the normal symptoms of an ssd that has failed?

I know that this is a Windows forum, but the laptop in question is a Macbook Pro running OS X Leopard. The ssd is a OCZ Vortex 120GB (I believe).

Now before anyone criticizes this laptop or me because this is a Mac, please note that this is NOT my laptop.

Do you happen to know what Firmware the drive is on?
Also, you say you cant see the drive in the bios anymore?



If the drive is not showing in the bios it may be "lost" The best thing for you to do in this situation is post at the official OCZ forums.

Perhaps Ryder can get you going again.






I have a 30GB Vertex. The first one died about 1 month or so after FW 1.5 update. It had to be RMA'd.

They sent a new one that came with FW 1.5. It too died after about 3 months.

For me, the 1st time I had a lot of System corruption 1 day. Next day, missing boot Mgr, then Gone from Bios.

The second drive gave a BSOD, then would not post if connected.

Thats how mine acted when they died. (Both times the drive disapeared from bios)



You can place a jumper and get it to be recognized ... best to have OCZ officials guide through that process.

They were able to revive my second drive and working fine now in this manner.

If this is the case, be warned it may involve a destructive back-flash and running a test tool then reflashing to the newest FW. Meaning a re-install of Windows.

hope you have a Image handy

both of my 60G Series1 OCZ's went back, RMA'd after doing exactly the same thing..
they just froze up solid..

OCZ replaced them both with updated models..

What would be the equivalent for a MAC as a Drive being dropped and unrecognized by Bios?

Wm, Nothing that I can think of.

There are key combinations that show available devices on bootup but no BIOS like we're used to.

Actually there is a type of BIOS but it's preset and can only be changed with firmware updates.
