What affects the speed that a file gets loaded and opened up?

When I double-click on a file, what affects the speed that it gets loaded and opened up? jpeg, mpg, mp3

Is it the CPU? Hard disk RPM? RAM per stick? Total RAM? Filename length? Number of sub-directories it is in?

Yes plus cache, pagefile, FSB, etc.

Might help if we had some more info on the type of files and your system specs.

On most current systems, HDD seek time is usually the determining factor for most small files.

What is the factor that affects file transfer speeds between HDDs? The transfer speed is slower when I'm transferring a large file from one hard drive to another as compared to when I'm transferring the same file from the latter to the former.
