What affects the speed that a file gets loaded and opened up?

When I double-click on a file, what affects the speed that it gets loaded and opened up? jpeg, mpg, mp3

Is it the CPU? Hard disk RPM? RAM per stick? Total RAM? Filename length? Number of sub-directories it is in?

Yes plus cache, pagefile, FSB, etc.

Might help if we had some more info on the type of files and your system specs.

On most current systems, HDD seek time is usually the determining factor for most small files.
