Laptop makes 'inserted device' noise but nothing put in?

I know this doesn't really give much away to my problem but i'm just as confused.

My laptop has recently started making the little beep noise that would occur when inserting a usb device etc. but i haven't inserted anything into the laptop at all?

I have checked various windows device programs but to no avail, there are no yellow triangles in the device manager, so i'm unsure as to what has caused this?

I have also system restored but it still proceeds to make the noise.

If anybody has any ideas on how to resolve this problem then i would really appreciate it!

    Thanks.

    Hi,

If you click start >> then right click computer >> select manage >> in the bottom left select disk management.

    ***EDIT***
Sorry, i misread that you are not actually inserting anything :)

    just to add to that...

you should hopefully be able see it in the bottom half of the screen, we can then assign it a letter.

If it isn't causing any other issues, can't you just ignore the noise? IMO it might be somewhat of a nuisance but not really a problem.

It's not causing any harm to computer but when trying to watch videos/films/play games etc. it is infuriating as it occurs every few seconds.

You could disable the inserted device sound

There should be a record in the System log of Event Viewer of what exactly did Windows think it installed.

I'm looking through the system log but there seems to be nothing relating to my issue?

I really don't want to just disable the noise because that doesn't resolve anything.

has anything physical happened to the laptop? maybe something stuck in a USB port? have you installed any new drivers ?
