    Canon DR-2580C Scanner Problems

I recently upgraded to W7 64 and can't get my Canon-DR-2850C scanner to work. According to Microsoft it's supposed to be compatible. I got and installed the driver package from the Canon site. Driver installed OK and device manager says it is "functioning properly." (I did not install the "job tool" below the Twain driver because it doesn't say it's compatible with W7.)

When I click the scanner icon in control panel it throws a pop-up that says: "You need a WIA driver to use this device" and it invites me to install it from my mfr CD, which I don't have anymore and anyway would not be compatible with W7. No scanning applications can see the scanner. Looked up this error message and it seems to mean I haven't installed a Twain driver, but of course that's what the Canon driver is.

Anyone have an idea about how to straighten this out? Canon seems to offer no support email links on their site (something I'll keep in mind during my next scanner purchase decision).

    Solution

No need to install other software, download 2580DRIT_V18.exe and 2580JOB.exe from Canon's site. The page as of today is Canon U.S.A. : Support & Drivers : imageFORMULA DR-2580C Compact Color Scanner

NOTE: If you have Windows 7 x64, use the drop down on the download page to select "Windows Vista (x64)". Then, you will see both of these files. If you select Windows 7 in the drop down, you won't see teh JOB tool. This is important.

Next, double-click each file and they will extract. Find the extracted setup.exe files for each. Run the setup.exe that came from 2580DRIT_V18.exe FIRST. Then run the extracted setup.exe from the 2580JOB.exe.

Then turn on the scanner and then plug it into your computer via USB.

Open the Job Registration tool and setup how you want to program the quick access buttons on the scanner (for instance, .pdf, black and white, destination path for the image, etc.).

Load your doc in the scanner and press your preset button, and you're off to the races.

This scanner does indeed work with Windows 7 x64, and no other crappy software is needed. Hope this helps somebody.

    Hi JunkDude

It works! But how anyone is to know to select Windows Vista when they have Windows 7 is beyond me! You've saved me serious money buying a quality legal document scanner (you're talking £500 plus) - I'd been using my existing scanner on my old XP computer, where it works fine and using my Windows 7 for other work, but I was getting tired of switching between the two, so it was just a question of time before I bit the bullet and got a new scanner.

    So hats off, big time!

    Cheers
