Guru's please read! PC continuously reboots...

Hello there all,

I have a very irritating problem on my hands which is very peculiar...

I have a fresh install of windows 7 ultimate. But... hehe.. MY PC KEEPS REBOOTING RANDOMLY! Its gotten to the point now where im about to throw it out the window. I could be doing anything and it will just all of a sudden reboot.

And to top it off, it reboots about 5-6 times after the bios has done its check, then reboots and goes back to the start of the check in bios.. then eventually it starts up. There is no set time that it starts rebooting. It does this at totally random intervals.

A friend of mine who deals in IT, thought it may just be the case that is causing something to go wonky. So we took it out the case, and booted the pc up. Low and behold.. it never rebooted once. So, we assumed it was the case giving problems. We then put it into another case.

We assumed the problem was solved, but it wasnt?!

We checked all of the following and tested:

Ram
CPU
Fans
Hard drives
All power cables
Power pack (550 w)

Im running out of ideas here? IF anyone could give some useful information, please help. Im unsure if this is a hardware or software issue, but i am sure it is hardware. Its a fresh install of Windows 7, and anti virus is running. So its doubtful its a virus.

Thanks in advance

Hi Sinobiah, when you took the mobo etc out of the case , did you take out all the hardware and devices ? If not and you only took the essentials out ,check what was left in the case it may be causing a short somewhere

Hi there..

Yes we did. The case was barebone except for the little cables for the box's extra USB devices. Also, unchecked the automatically restart after system failure thingy... but it still restarts

Sinobiah, remove everything except ram and graphics card and HDD ,so you are running on the bare essentials ,if ity boots ok and no BSODs add the remaining devices 1 by 1 and see which is the culprit

Either something is causing an intermittent short or you have an inadequate power supply..

Sometimes there is a setting in the Bios for auto reboot on power failure. Make sure that is turned OFF for now until the exact problem is isolated & solved.

I HIGHLY doubt that as the power supply is 550 W.

I will check to see if there is such setting, and do so.

Don't be so sure of that. The original PSU in my system was 750w, and 2 hours of prime95 destroyed it

Please list your power supply so we can check the specs on it. Also it's not so much the wattage that counts as it is the amps on the +12v rail(s).
I ask because i see that your running 5 hard drives. Thanks. Fabe
