If you close all of your active programs, does it stop? I rarely hear my drives stop on my other computer, except when I am completely idle or logged out.
Now I installed HDD led indicator and I see its working normal but I still hear something that sounds like HDD reading or writing.
If you pull out the drive connection that is not your system drive, does it still do it? (please remember to shut down the computer first)
Or, IIRC you can disable a hard drive... If someone else has how to do this before I finish searching for it, chime in.
My Vista is giving the same problem until I run Performance Monitor and saw that Vista keeps on writing to a file for system restore. I turned System Restore off and the hdd stopped blinking.
hit CTRL+ALTShift+ESC click on the performance tab, click on resource monitor, then the HDD tab expand all drop down arrows and it will tell you every service application, anything accessing your hdd.
7 might be performing a scheduled defrag, your AV program might be updating and/or scanning your machine, or you could have malware "phoning home". If you need greater detail than Task Manager provides you could use the free Process Monitor or Process Explorer. You don't have to install them, you can run them in your browser. I'd also suggest running the free Malwarebytes to make sure you don't have any malware.
