1394 is your firwire port, not your wireless card. XP will let you network over it like you do with a wired NIC. Make sure the onboard wifi card isn't toggled off by a keyboard key. If there is a status LED that may tell you if its actually turned on or not. Also have a look at the running services and make sure "Wireless zero configuration" is running. Some third party wireless management utilities stop that service and use there own. When you switch back to the built in windows XP one that service doesn't always get started again. Your wireless won't work without it.
