Suddenly getting Code 32 on both optical drives
I noticed today that my office workstation suddenly is showing a Code 32 error "A driver (service) for this device has been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this functionality." for both of my optical drives. The two drives are:
Philips DVD+-RW DVD8801 ATA Device
TSSTcorp CD-RW TS-H292C ATA Device
Now I really don't read or burn CD's or DVD's all that much at work, so I don't know how long it's been like this. I just happened to notice the yellow triangle showing on my computer's icon in Devices & Printers. I've always had problems with the CD drive and never use it at all actually. I always read or write both CD's and DVD's in the Philips drive.
The machine is a Dell Precision 490 workstation, coming up on 4 years old at the first of the year.
- two dual-core Xeon 5150 2.66GHz proc's
- OS upgraded last year to Win7 Professional 64-bit
- memory upgraded last year to 8x 2GB memory (16GB total)
I last used the DVD probably a couple of months ago, and it was fine then. Now the drive letters don't even show up at all. I went to Explanation of error codes generated by Device Manager in Windows XP Professionaland checked on Code 32, tried uninstalling and reinstalling the devices, nothing. Tried updating the drivers, nothing. Windows says the drivers are up to date. I tried downloading and running some Microsoft Fix It troubleshooting program, and all it did was detect the issues but didn't do jack to fix it.
I tried clicking on the link on the page above to get some instructions about checking and/or changing the device start type in the registry, but the target page doesn't seem to exist anymore and it takes me to this Windows Server Resources index page instead Windows Resource Kits - Web Resources
I also checked System Information > Components > CD-ROM and here is what it tells me:

Anyone have an idea what I can do? I'm no stranger to registry edits so if I knew which keys to look for, that would be great.
