IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem. Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:
The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb. What I've Tried Doing: - I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
- I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.
The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.
If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.
I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.
You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.
Hope that helps. | My System Specs | | Computer type PC/Desktop System Manufacturer/Model Number Home Built - Jan 2013 OS Windows 7 64 Bit Home Premium SP1 CPU i7-3820 Motherboard Asus P9X79-PRO - Bios 3305 Memory GSkill F3-14900CL9Q - 16GB Graphics Card EVGA GeForce GTX660 - Driver 310.90 Sound Card On board Realtek ALC898 Monitor(s) Displays Acer S271HL Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 Keyboard MS KC-0405 Mouse Intellimouse 5-button PSU Corsair CMPSU-850TX-V2 - 850 watt (by Seasonic) Case Corsair Obsidian 550D Cooling Standard 3 120mm case fans, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Hard Drives #1- Samsung 840 Pro Series

Seeing how Maxtor is now Seagate, I would run the SeaTool to determine the actual state of your drive. ~100 GB don't just disappear into thin air.

What is the make and model of the motherboard? It may take an install of proper motherboard/chipset drivers (if available) other than the ones that Windows installs by default .Also both drives are showing as SCSI drives, Quote: Drive: C:

There is a Seagate ST 912082 (which is a 2.5" 120GB IDE or Sata drive)
and a Samsung 152 GB scsi without closer specification ???

I should explain the issue further to help you all out:
Currently, I have three harddrives in my computer: the 120gb 2.5" Seagate, a 160gb Samsung HD16OJJ and the problematic Maxtor. I don't know much about the Maxtor, but it reads on it: "Maxtor DiamondMax 16 250GB ATA/133 HDD.
The 2.5" 120gb is a new addition to my motherboard (Asus SK8V) which I added the day before the initial post in this thread. This replaced a 160gb Samsung HD161HJ which stopped working after I left my computer idle for 45 minutes. When it broke, it took with it my second RAID slot on my motherboard.
I use a lot of space on my computer, so I decided I would migrate to not using RAID so that I could still have three hard drives and just use the normal SATA slots. My 250GB has been on my motherboard's one IDE slot all this time and worked fine, but now I've turned RAID off and switched to turning off my Promise drivers or running in Onboard IDE Operations (Is that what it's called?) it only reads as 149GB. It worked perfectly fine before my RAID went bust and I had to migrate to the normal SATA slots and even if I turn back to RAID, windows dosen't like detecting the full 250GB.
As for what you pointed out stormy and Sledge, I don't know why it's not appearing in my DxDiag. It does appears in the BIOS at the correct size, but it is registring in Windows itself at the wrong size. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86 |

Most likely the drive has an extra partition on it. You can try cleaning the partitions by using the the diskpart commands. The "clean" command "fast" should get rid of the extra partition if there is one. The "clean all" command is for rezeroing the drive, takes forever. Thank you for all of your help, but I resolved the issue. I do not know why, but force-installing the Windows XP drivers for the Promise Sata378 solved the issue and made Windows show the proper space. I don't understand why this made a difference, especially as these are XP drivers and it may be tempormental but it will get me by. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Ultimate x86 |
