In-built webcam problems on ASUS Eee PC 1005HAG

    Hello everybody!

Firstly i'm new here (so hi, hope you're all well and all that!) and also new to Windows 7. I have a second hand ASUS Eee PC netbook, running W7 Starter. I recently installed Skype and can't seem to get the built in webcam to work. I keep getting the "This device can perform faster" message. When I click the balloon I get the window telling me to disconnect the USB Composite Device from it's current port and re-connect it to the one displayed in bold type, which supports the Hi-Speed USB2 yahdeyah! How on earth do I do that??? I have tried disabling in Device manager but couldn't get that to work. While i'm reasonably tech savvy, this is just a little bit out of my reach and woulod really appreciate any help you folks can give me.

    Thanks in anticipation

Most likely this is a driver issue. The "This device can perform faster" message is not a sign of any problem by itself. You can get such message any time you use a USB 1.0 port. Now, why does Windows think that your built-in camera is USB 1.0 - I don't know, I would first check the manual to see what kind of connection is there and then check the ASUS site for an updated driver.

The more important question, does your Skype see the camera at all? Even as USB 1.0?

    Hello and welome to SevenForums.

You will probably get more responses by giving you thread the title of WebCam Does Not Work on Asus EEC

    Descriptive titles catch more attention.

Second, fill in your system specs!

HOW TO FILL OUT YOUR SYSTEM SPECS

In the line at the top of www.SevenForums.com you will see UserCP.
That is an abbreviation for User Control Panel.
    Click on UserCP.
In the left-hand column, under Your Profile you will see Edit System Spec.
    Click on Edit System Spec
You can copy and paste from the output of Speccy, Speccy - System Information - Free Download to fill out much of the info. Be sure to use the Other Info section of your System Specs for such info as your optical drive, your wireless adapter, your speakers, etc.

    Now the key question:

    Does the webcam work?

    Did the webcam ever work?

Hi, thanks for the posting advice. Been a number of years since I did any forum posting... little bit rusty!!

    To answer the questions:

    1) The webcam has worked (intermittently) with the E-Cam software, supplied on the netbook
    2) The webcam doesn't appear to work now, regardless of which program I use.

However, when I initially installed Skype, it did the tests to see what functionality I would be able to use and it seemed to work then (I saw myself on the screen ;-) )

Interesting that drivers are mentioned. I had a look on the ASUS website (which is incredibly slow I found) because my BIOS appears to be quite old (0202 version?) and was scared off by a few posts in the forum there saying that people's pooters weren't working properly after updating. This is my only point of contact with my folks back home (having just moved to Germany) and if I break it, I don't necessarily have the know how to fix it again.... and I haven't made any computer whizz-kid friends here yet. Hence proceeding with caution!!!

Once again, thanks very much for any helpful advice you guys and gals (one assumes) can give.

    Hi Junglemassif,

I wouldn't worry too much about downloading drivers from the ASUS site it's the BIOS update i'd steer clear of at the minute if other have reported problems.

I would also look into downloading the 'chipset' drivers in case it's a slightly older version causing the issue

    Thanks for the additional info.

Now, you say that it did work correctly right after installing Skype.

That tells us that the drivers, although maybe out-of-date, work.
That tells us that the bios works, although maybe there is a newer version.

That tells me that we need to look somewhere else for the source of your problem.

Do you perhaps have a system restore point from the time that all worked?

Please, even if you are familiar with restore points, read the following:
System Restore - How to use

If that doesn't do it, then the next thing to do is completely uninstall your present antivirus/firewall software and install Microsoft Security Essentials and turn on the Windows Firewall.

AV & firewall software can have very strange effects on what would appear to be unrelated software.
    MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials

Most of us use MSE and Windows Firewall.

If you have installed any of those super-duper speed-up cleanup your computer programs, then uninstall them now.

Let us know if problem still exists after all of those things.

Now on a side note: I have an asus ha1002xp but with win 7 ultimate installed. You can improve performance by upgrading to 2 GB of ram and also by using a 4GB usb stick as "ready boost" storage.

Where in Germany are you located? There are many asus users there and many savvy computer users there.
