I suggest the purchase of a long Cat5 or 6 cable to keep coiled up and when gaming aggressively just connect your laptop via the cable and when surfing and emailing and such when the fastest speeds aren't as important than go wireless and be free !

exactly, wireless sucks for gaming where the fastest and most stable connections are needed

Given security and speed of a CAT5 NW, I myself wouldn't give up a wired connection for a full time wireless (and I don't play games). I would run a phone line out of the jack, over the kitchen doorway and front door, down to and along the baseboard (on top or tucked between the baseboard and carpet), behind the table and up to the router, sitting somewhere close to the table. This, to me, would be an acceptable solution (after all, phone lines are pretty small and can be tacked down with tiny staples).

If you absolutely can't live with that, why not just run a cat 5 calble across the floor to your router whenever you want to play?

If you are going to stay with your wireless full or part time, be sure you secure your router...here's a good start:

Excellent suggestions guys ! thanks I think I'm going to go out and but a long cable and just connect it whenever I'm doing heavy duty gaming. To be honest it won't bother me, when I'm finished I just unplug it and tuck it away in my drawer beside my computer desk.

    I couldn't live without this forum ! :)

TVeblen, while having a gigabit switch is nice, if it's only for one PC (as the OP has) it's not necessary. Home internet will come nowhere NEAR saturating even a 100 Mbit router connection. Heck, I have 2 PCs and streaming media from one to the other is FINE even on a WRT54GL (100 Mbit wired connections).
So essentially you're saying that I should have no issue with my wireless connection then eh ? Windows says the speed is 130 Mbps
what windows says and what you actually are using will be different in real-time
use this tool and you will see real-time figures Bandwidth monitor, bandwidth speed test, bandwidth and traffic monitoring tool for Windows
