Accessing files from external HD

having never done this before, I am trying to access the files on my hd (in an enclosure) that came from my desktop running XP. Currently running Windows 7 Home.
I am able to change permissions for individual folders, but find myself having to follow the same step for each individual file within each folder. It will take forever at the rate I am going, for example, a folder called 'photos': I gain permission to that folder, but then must do the same for each ind. photo in the folder, which could potentially be in the hundreds ...
My question is: Is there a way to take ownership and change permissions to the entire hd at one time so that I have complete copy, write, edit access to the external drive?

any help appreciated...

thx in advance
