Hard Disk & Chkdsk

I had a hard disk that was getting funky. Ran chkdsk /f 3 or 4 times and each time it came up with some orphaned files. I backed up what I wanted from the disk and repartioned and formated and restored the files. It seems to have fixed the problem. What is chkdsk not checking (or can't handle)?

You may need to run chkdsk/r to repair.

Chkdsk /R

The disk seems allright now. If it acts up again I'll try the /r. I think that gets the bad clusters. Right?

/F fixes errors on the disk. /R locates bad sectors and recovers readable information (implies /F).

"CHKDSK x: /F /R" would perform a full scan (including bad sectors) and attempt to fix them.

For future refrences, you can always type the command along with a space followed by /?. It'll tell you about the command and it's parameters in detail.

You might also want to consider replacing the serial ata cable. Mine got me HD and booting problems when my PC's serial ata cable is failing. .
