2 New Upgrades... What do you guys think?

Alright so my CPU is a little outdated (P4) and I decided to finally upgrade. I didn't like my options with the socket 775 cpus and Intel is just so fooking overpriced so I'm going with AMD... I just (literally 5mins ago) bought a ASUS M4A89GTD PRO Mobo (Usb 3.0, Sata 6.0 and all the nifty little features) and a AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition Callisto 3.2GHz (6 mb L3, 4x512kb L2) and apparently theres a way to unlock two more cores making it a quad? But I'm upgrading to those components from an MSI p7n Diamond and as previosuly stated, a P4 3.0ghz with 1mb l2 cache. Have I made a good choice?

I will have to say the reason why the cores were locked(disabled) was because they did not match up with the quality they desired for performance. You may obtain BSODS related to unlocking the cores as well as some performance issues.

Not a bad choice at all. Should give you a huge performance boost compared to what you previously had. As far as unlocking those two extra cores, mckillwashere put it best about that in that even if you could, you'd probably end up with BSODs. The only AMD CPU as of late that had a fourth core to unlock that worked sometimes was the Phenom II X3 720 if I remember correctly and even that wasn't always reliable.

I looked into it and they did release a x2 version that was unlockable...

personally I would never buy a chip that had disabled cores for the simple fact that if one part of the production when bad whast to say something else wont fail later on?
It seems like there is a greater chance of that happening one one that has already been deemed not worth to be an x4, or even an x3 chip.
Granted at times they do just have a quota to meet on production so they will lock the cores and ship them as an x2 or an x3.
Mate I hope you the best on getting one of the ones with all "good condition" cores and have a happy unlocking
