Need Major Help With 360 Controller

I've had the controller for a few months and never had any problems with it. All of a sudden it stopped working. When i plug it in the lights on the centre button flash a couple of times and then go dead. My computer won't read it. I decided to uninstall the driver so i could reinstall it. When it was uninstalling it stopped responding and i had to switch the computer off. After i rebooted i checked the device list and the controller wasn't listed so it looked like it unstalled. I then downloaded the driver again and i've started installing it but the progress bar has stopped moving right near the end ARGH! How can i get this working?

Edit: Ok it installed but it still won't connect

Ok i'm extremely confused. I went to do a system restore but it just hanged at "preparing to restore you system" for ages. So i powered off and booted up safe mode so i could do a restore. As soon as safe mode booted it a bubble popped up saying the driver sucessfully installed. I also tried to installed driver software for an external hardrive earlier which failed, but a bubble came up for that too saying it was successful. I then booted windows normally and now the controller's working WTF?! What could have caused the drivers to not install?!

Did you disable the controller/hard drive in task manager?
