Did you install iTunes? If so, did you install the 64-bit version if you're running Win 7 64-bit? I have a (I think) 5th gen iPod with video and it works fine with my Win 7 HP 6-bit.

I use an iPod Touch and Classic and they both work fine with 7. If all else fails you could try MediaMonkey Free Media Jukebox, Music Manager, CD Ripper & Converter
This works/synchs with both and iPhones, etc.

As others have stated, the problem is not with Windows 7. You need software that supports iPod. Of course, iTunes works. I myself broke away from iTunes some years back and use MediaMonkey (as mentioned by KenC). If you prefer Windows Media Player support, here is a link (not free...30 day free trial):

Sync your iPod with Windows Media Player

Media Monkey is a great program. Has many features, but a bit of a learning curve:

MediaMonkey Download

The interface is a bit clunky. I tired it and let it sit on my HD for a few years, but once I started getting to know it and using it, there was no turning back.
