Sounds like the external drive had died. It's possible just the enclosure electronics has died and the drive itself is still okay. You can remove it from the enclosure and install it as a 2nd hard drive in your computer, mount it in another external drive enclosure or buy a USB Universal Drive adapter and connect it to your computer that way.

I have a NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter that I use for this purpose but there are many other brands available as well. Works with IDE (PATA) and SATA drives from desktop and laptop computers.

The Hard Drive will be inside the external enclosure. You need to figure out how to open it up so you can remove the HD.

Inside it's a totally common IDE or SATA drive (more likely IDE..depending on the model)
So, like already mentioned you either put it inside the comp or get a new enclosure or option #3 get some form of IDE 2USB adaptor.
When my 1st. external gave up after a year (power supply gave out), I just bought this enclosure for $20.00 incl external power supply (because my drive was 3.5"...too big for power through USB)
    It runs fine ever since.
