AMD Vs Intel, Can it be affordable and good to?

Basically I am upgrading a machine on a slight budget, and I have been looking on newegg and found this

    Newegg.com - AMD Athlon II X2 250 Regor 3.0GHz 2 x 1MB L2 Cache Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor ADX250OCGMBOX

Its considerably cheaper than the intel duel core processors, and if I get this then I can upgrade my hard drive as well with my limited budget.

However I know very little about AMD processors, and I really don't want to end up with a lemon.

As far as the specs go for the machine I am upgrading... Its quite terrible, I have already gave its a new PSU, Graphics Card, and upped the Ram, and the CPU is really bottle-necking the performance.

    OS: Windows Vista Basic x86
    Ram: 4GB
CPU: 1.6GHz AMD 64 x2 "although cpu-z reports the processor is only clocked at 1.1 GHz"
    Hard Drive: 150GB
    Graphics: nVidea 8600gt
    PSU: 500W

I still prefer AMD for their cost effectiveness.

The Regor x2s are fine CPUs, and should be a significant upgrade from what you have already.

But be aware, it does require a AM3 socket motherboard.
