Windows 7: CD ROM -- starts to burn, then resets

CD ROM -- starts to burn, then resets

An Optiarc DVD RW AD-7241S is installed (and is recognized by Windows).

When a blank CD is used it goes through the normal set of questions asking if it is to be used as a data or audio CD. Everything works as normal...until the BURN button is pressed.

Once the burn button is clicked it starts the burning process with the progress bar appearing showing how much time remains to completion. Then, with the progress bar showing about 20% complete the progress bar window disappears and the window that appears when you first but in a blank CD reappears (the one asking if you want to burn a data or audio CD).

At this point it sounds like the CD is still burning the files. In fact the CD Rom motor will continue to spin the disk until the system is Shut Down. Shut Down is required because if the system is simply restarted the CD Rom will continue to spin through the whole reboot. (Of course, I've tried pressing the button to open the CD tray when the chaos sets in, but that does nothing).

To make matters worse whenever another blank CD is put in it'll let me know that there are files waiting to be burned, which are the ones from the previous attempt.

This is a new development and one that is a real head scratcher.

Windows 8, Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, Pear Linux Triple Boot

Mine did that the other day to me as well, it was freaking weird!! I had to reboot to get the CD-r out. Here's what I found out when I took the disc it "burned" out and put it in my wife's laptop. my PC tried to burn the data files as audio files, even though I did not select that, and freaked the whole sytem out. I was really confused and have no answer on why it does this, but you are not alone I ended up just grabbing a true burning program that was recomended in this thread:

FREE Great Programs for Windows 7

here is a link to it:

BurnAware Free Overview

I have had no issues from there. I now stay away from windows default burning, as I found it useless

I have to agree with Geeve.

It isn't worth the time and trouble to find out what is wrong with Windows or the Sony drive or the CD's.
Is the conflict between Windows and the Sony drive or the CD?
It may never work right or it may be the Sony player just does not like your brand of CD's.
You may try a different brand of CD and it may work perfectly.

Too many variables so a good burning program usually solves the problem.

Never used BurnAware myself but worth a try.

Windows 7x64 Home Premium SP1

This may not affect your specific problems but I had problems with an external USB DVD writer until I found the hotfix KB975617. You may already have it but I lost it in a reinstall.
haven't had problems since installing it.
