ipod classic 80g not accessible

(I am using Windows 7 build 7100 on an Acer Extensa 4630z laptop.)

My 80g classic 1st gen ipod connects to the laptop and its drivers load successfully and the ipod itself reads as connected, however it doesn't show up in any media applications (itunes, floola, windows media player, etc).

I have already done the following: uninstalled itunes, deleted all of its program folders, uninstalled all ipod drivers, etc. and then reinstalled everything after having reboot. This did not solve the issue. I also made sure that the ipod service isn't in conflict with other services.

All other USB connected devices function fine.

Possibly related: Win 7 is unable to find appropriate base system drivers for my laptop.

Any ideas?
