Infuriating Prolific driver puzzle

I have just finished a new build Intel i3 on a Gigabyte GA-H55M-UD2H mobo running Windows 7. Both the PCI slots are vacant and I have no need of them. However, I have a device identified as "Prolific USB to COMM port (COM 6)" which infuriatingly loads no driver. I tried downloading the Prolific PL-2303 driver which was the advice thrown up by the O.S. but installation is not successful giving "Error code 10". If that is chased up through the Prolific support pages all you learn is that Prolific are fingering a dodgy cable. I have no such cable installed! Removing the device in Dev Mgr simply results in a repeat of the failure to load driver merry-go-round.

Any ideas please ?

I certainly did. That was the entrance into the merry-go-round I mentioned. What is really puzzling me is what device have I got which is calling for this device. I can't think of anything I have. It must be something built in to the Gigabyte board?

The device is a printer or scanner port, have you installed a printer/scanner lately, if so it is probably a usb connection and you have it setup on the wrong port, should be LPT1 i think

I have a Canon Pixma ip4600 on which there is a Pictbridge port (looks like USB) but which I never ever use.. The Pixma software is fully installed so should have taken care of that. I'll get to the bottom of it eventually I suppose.

I will have to figure out how to change it to LPT1 which I always thought was a printer port anyway. Com 6 was shown as the troublesome USB to serial one.
