Windows 7: Blu-ray Player for my Computer

Is there a way to know your computer is all good to support the change?

Also, is there a way to NOT replace the DVD player with a blu-ray one, and instead just connect a player to the computer and have it sit right next to it?

Plextor PX-B120U, that was the picture I posted in my post #11 in this thread. I purchased it from Newegg in Oct 2010 since it was cheaper there. You can still get it from amazon.com and other vendors, but prices vary.

To test your system, download the Cyberlink BD and 3D Advisor from CyberLink Blu-ray Disc Support and run it.

I also have a Sony-Optiarc BC-5500S BD ROM USB external drive bought from ebay USA. Just search for USB external BDROM drives in newegg, amazon, ebay and you may get a good number of them.

These are basically OEM drives used by DELL, HP and others in their laptops, but put in an external casing. You will not get any software bundled with them.

But unlike the Plextor PX-B120U which is read only for all optical media BD/DVD/CD, these lappy drives can only read BDs but read/write DVD/CD.

Since you already have a DVD/CD writer, your choice naturally will point to the Plextor unit. Its a real nice thing to have since it is portable and USB powered. I actually took the pictures for writing a user-review ; it never materialised but you can google and read a lot of reviews on it. ( I never buy anything without going through all available reviews )

You just need a spare USB 2.0 port for it.

Only downside to that external drive is it's only a 4X speed. Might not be a problem for most blu-rays, but newer blu-ray disks might have longer load times.
