Can't update to latest USB 3 Driver

Still having doubts my WD Passport is performing at it's optimum on my USB 3 connection. So I went to the ASUS website and downloaded what they say is the latest USB 3 driver for my Laptop's motherboard.

Keep getting an error 16 and the installation is terminated.

Have contacted ASUS tech support, they gave me another link to what they told me was the latest driver, - same problem! After several more phone calls the conclusion was, scrub your hard drive and do a fresh install of Win 7. Decided this was an option I wasn't going to persue!

I've read here about other issues with USB 3 drivers. Does it necessarily mean if I go to Device Manager and select the option to update the USB 3 driver, and windows states the current driver installed is the latest, that this is in fact correct?

Is trying to persue the installation of this new NEC driver a worthwhile quest and does anyone have a work around they know will work?

I'm reluctanct to uninstall the current USB 3 driver to try to install the new one to see if it works, because if the above error occurs again I'm left will no USB 3 driver at all.

    Any ideas?

    1. Go to the manufactures website and download the latest driver.
    2. Try it in another port to see if it works there or in another computer just to check it.

    Welcome to 7 Forums!
Help will be on the way but not tonight. Happy New Years.

Happy New Year to you guys who are yet to see the old year out. It's day one here in OZ so enjoy yourselves tonight!!!

The file downloaded from the ASUS site was a Zip file with an executable file that I presumed would take care of the entire installation.

Are you able to just download the driver itself and install it through the Device manager?

Forget the Device Manager for now.
Just unzip the file from Asus and open it up. Then check to see if WD Passport is working.
More help will be here tomorrow.

    Have to leave for now.

Hi Again, it appears my non loading of the latest USB 3 driver might be windows related.

Following the suggestion from The Howling Wolves, (above), I've downloaded yet another later usb3 driver from the ASUS site. So I thought maybe they've fixed the bug in it maybe.

Not likely, once it started the install procedure an error came up, but it's not error 16 as I previously said, (did the first test a month or so ago), it's "Error:-1605 This action is only valid for products that are currently installed" and yes there are USB 3 ports showing in the Device Manager. So whether Windows doesn't recognise them, whether they are functional but not available, or whether they are being used by the WD passport drive or not I haven't a clue.

A google of this number and USB 3 got me to the microsoft site and it appears it's some sort of software installation issue. The auto FIX it option at Microsoft didn't fix the problem either.

So where to now oh learn-ed ones? I'm way out of my depth.
