Hard Drive "Corrupt" but files still work

    I think Partition Wizard could solve the problem. Given the data is replaceable it should easy to get the drive operational and a good chance of recovering what's on there. There are no guarantees. With PW steps are

    1. Delete partition (produces an unallocated partition)
    2. Partition Recover Wizard
    3. Set Partition as primary
    4. Check file system (Check & fix detected errors option).

    You need to "Apply" these operations in PW. I like to Apply each step separately. I tried this on one of my working ext HDD partitions.
    If the above failed the next step for me would be a clean followed by a full format.

    It is useful for OPs to post back their results (good and bad). It helps everyone including those giving their free time providing suggestions.

    Hey guys.

    Sorry. I've been really busy, and I haven't been near a computer for a few days.

    Recuva doesn't seem to want to help with intact files. It's only listing files I've recently deleted off of the drive.

    When I hit properties, the drive appears as having "0kb free of 0kb," I changed permissions to full for all users/system, but that didn't help, but it did go through all the files. Yet I can't access the drive directly.

    The "Taking Ownership" bar doesn't appear when I right-click the drive. Only when I right-click on files.

    I'd really prefer not to use the Partition Wizard, but if that's the only solution, I'll do that, and see what happens. I go back to college in a week so I can recover my files from there, as that's where I got them all.

    If anyone has any suggestions before I use the PW, that's great. If not, I'll go ahead and see what happens.

    OK. My suggestion is to follow mjf's advice - I'm not sure what other options there are.

    Trying mjf's idea now. Looks like it's gonna take about 2 hours to recover the partition. Since I've already passed the point of no return by deleting the partition, I'll just wipe the drive should that fail, and (slowly) fill it back up when I can get back onto my college's network (Rutgers, if anyone's interested).

    Thanks for your help, guys. You've saved my behind twice now. I'll post my results when I'm finished.

    did you delete the partition during start up? when I use mini partition software it made me restart the computer it tried to delete it during start up but it just hang there.... sometimes the software freezes when opening it on windows desktop

    edit now the partition is deleted and start up the minitool works fine til I tried to recover and it just stuck at the recover page... I guess let finish lagging and I'll report back

    I think there is a bit of a dilemma sometimes.
    I have found the boot CD version more robust for certain "big" jobs. I'm guessing Windows OS being out of the way helps.
    But for some operations you want to maintain the Windows disk partition letter assignment. An example is dynamic to basic disk conversion (which I think underneath may be fairly simple??). This is best done with the minitool I think.
    In my opinion (& limited experience), big partition operations like moves are best done with the boot CD/USB.

    Problem Over


    Hey guys.

    I'm officially closing the book on this one.

    I didn't have the time to deal with overnight scans anymore, as I leave for Rutgers in less than 24 hours.

    I made absolutely sure there wasn't anything irreplacable on the drive, and I formatted it. It works fine now.

    I'm gonna open Recuva and see if it can find anything. If it doesn't, I'll be back on campus tomorrow, and I'll have remote access to everything there.

    Thanks for your help, guys. Stinks that it didn't turn out the way I'd hoped, but I just don't have time with the semester starting soon. As a CS major, I need my computers. lol
