Targus USB 2.0 DVD-ROM drive issues

Hi I just got a targus usb dvd drive for my laptop and it doesn't work properly. The first time I plugged it in windows automatically detected it and installed the device correctly. However, now when I try to install games and programs with it the setup starts but as soon as it gets to the installation the drive just spools and stops and does this over and over again and never installs the program. I have tried this drive on my desktop and it works perfectly fine. I have an alienware m11x with windows 7 home premium and when I called alienware they assured me it was a defective drive... Even after I told them it works perfectly on my desktop. Device manager shows it as working properly, however at one point It said "A previous installation of this device is still running" and I was unable to use it then untill I unistalled it from device manager and plugged it back in and let windows do the automatic installation. Is there a driver I should look for? Or a setting I need to change? Its using the original windows driver and when I click to update driver it says its using the most current but its from 2006. I just want to make sure I'm not missing something before I Return the drive.

Thanks, I'll try the firmware update. If that doesn't do it I'll return it and try a better brand
