I refer you to your motherboard manual (can be downloaded from manufacturers site)
for the placement of the Ram in the recommended slots. However your post is confusing as you say you had 2x 2gb sticks =4gb that are slightly different speeds but worked.
This is a problem to begin with since mixing different speed ram is inherently problematic. Normally your system will default to the lower speed Ram thus causing your system to make an extra calculation which is never a good idea. You then say you would like top get another 2gb stick and make it up to 8gb in total(this would only be 6gb at this point). You then said when you installed and it didn't work. So as you go on, I take it now you have 6gb all the same and it didn't work, so you ordered another 2gb which would make 8gb of all the same speed only different manufacturers?. Hoping it will fix the problem correct? First off as you have found mixing Ram is never suggested or a good idea. Secondly you won't be able to run dual channel mode until you have the 4th 2gb stick and when populating the slots you need to refer to your manual in order to know which slots they recommend you use. At this point since the 3x2gb all the same speed that don't work you need to once again refer to you MB manual and populate 1 slot with 1 stick at a time as per manual and run memtest86 5-8 passes each to check each stick for any errors. Memtest86 - Download Page
Follow the directions and burn the ISO run the program and test each stick individually. 5-8 passes.
Then you should download GPU-z and click on the memory tab and the speed tab and post screen shots of each so we can see what Ram we're talking about.
CPUID/GPU-z) download
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting download on the right of the page.
Have you checked your boards QVL (Qualified Vendors List) for Ram tested to run on your board at the rated speeds.
Some boards just don't get along with some Ram.
Please run the tests above and post the screen shots and we'll go from there.
