Windows 7: Disappearing HDD?

Disappearing HDD?

What the title says, got a new HDD the other week there (750GB Seagate, forget the serial code) and slapped it on the computer.

Went and formatted it and it runs fine on my PC, except earlier today (a week after installation) the thing has mysteriously disappeared from My Computer. Its a secondary drive (used for music, games and film storage) but I dont get why it would disappear. I rebooted and there it was back again. Just there now before shutting it down I noticed that it had once again disappeared from My Computer.

BTW checked it in BIOS; it IS listed/detected under Bootable Drives so I really am stumped =/

Any ideas lads?

PS - the primary system HDD (200GB Maxtor) has had no problems so far.

I reckon there could be an entry hidden away in the advanced settings in the power options aplet within control panel. open control panel,
select power options,
select 'change plan settings' of the currently selected power choice, you can tell the active selection by where the radio button is set.
Within edit plan there's a choice of change advanced power settings, this is quite a verbose listing of things that can be turned off and on.
the second or third setting is hard drive. there is a setting to turn hard drives off after an amount of inactivity.

let us know how you get on.

Thanks for the reply.

I seem to have fixed the problem due to searching online. It seems that Windows 7 (both 32 and 64 bit) can sometimes have a problem with addressing SATA HDD's over 500gb. If your comp goes into sleep mode, when restarting Windows for some reason fails to recognise the large HDD.

You can download a fix for either platforms here:

You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk

PS - even if some of the symptoms dont apply the fix still works (as I never recieved any stop messages!)

Again thanks for the reply =)

if it happens again, it might be an autorun issue and you can fix it with a program called auto eater.
