There is no noticeable difference between them

Difference Between LCD and LED Televisions | Difference Between | LCD vs LED Televisions

LED TV’s are still LCD TV’s. They are just considered to be the newer LCD TV version because of the new backlight system used. The LED TV uses Light Emitting Diodes, while the standard LCD TV uses fluorescent lamps. Although they both still use Liquid Crystal Display technology. The main difference is the part behind their screen, which is the backlight.

LED based LCD monitors can, in general, give you more uniform and accurate color than cold cathode backlit LCD monitors.

I think you may have to pay a lot more $$$$ if you want a large LED LCD.
I have a 30" LCD (not an LED backlit model) and I do a lot of graphic and photographic work and it looks pretty darn good to my sore eyes.

And I heard LED is more energy efficient.. but somehow I think LCD won't be that much worse

    LED is just brighter IMO.

Do you pay attention to color accuracy or uniformity of color and intensity? I expect a CG artist does.

With a cold cathode tube (non LED) stronger color filters are needed and are not accurate plus you have to direct the light from a single tube uniformly over the entire flat screen, which is difficult, and most entry to mid-level CCFL lit LCD monitors don;t do a great job of it. Getting uniformity across the screen with a CCFL tube LCD I suspect costs as much or more than an LED lit LCD. With an LED, behind each pixel is an electronic light source which can be made very uniform in intensity and color accuracy. Plus an LED will, in principle, last longer as it is solid state while the gas CCFL tube will age and loose intensity. In addition, you will get a wider color gamut with a LED backlit display compared to an middle level CCFL LCD.

A LED can be less bulky as well.

An apple 27" Cinema display costs less than $1000. I paid $1300 for my 24" CCFL NEC Spectraview monitor over a year ago. I am not suggesting the Cinema, just sayin the price ....

If I am in the market again it will be an LED backlit display for me. I have one on my macbook pro and the color is dead on and uniform out of the box. I have some credentials - color is important to me as I do wildlife photography and use calibrated monitors and Photoshop for my work. Now whether there are LED monitors at a reasonable price out there that have other desirable attributes I don't know - I haven;t looked for a couple of years.

If you decide not to get an LED, then you may want to pay attention to the panel type. An IPS (IPS-H or equivalent) type LCD panel will let you view at wider angles without intensity or color distortion than other types of panels.

Neither is 'better' for anyone in terms of their usefulness or color accuracy. Software can address perceived color differences. No two people perceive the same colors on the same screen. LED is an evolution, rather than an improvement, in the cost of production and maintenance.

If you are a starving CG artist, LCD is best in the short run. Lower initial cost with a bulb replacement pending. If you have the funding available, LED is best in the longer term.

HI yeroman - And the resolution - very important too. 2560 x 1600 @ 32 million colors. Sure shows LOTS of detail. Most all of the good video cards support this mode now.

I have a 20" Samsung LED. It can only support up to 1600x900 but so far I've had no problems regarding color accuracy compared to Apple Displays which are so bad for artists in my opinion.
But there are big HDMI monitors out there that catches my attention but when I look at the specs, they're only LCD's.
