Computer Shutting down and turning on.

Hi,

I am not sure whether this is the correct place to post this but, as of late my computer has been shutting down and turning on by its self. I can be using it and it will automatically close down all the programs that I have open and will turn its self off a few hours later it will turn back on and will load windows up. So far I have tried swapping out the PSU with a known working one, changing the hard drive swapping the memory, resetting the CMOS, reinstalling windows. None of these have fixed the issue. I am now thinking that this issue is either the following a faulty power switch on the case or a fault somewhere on the computers motherboard.

The specs are as follows:

Antec 380W EarthWatts Green PSU

Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB Hard Drive

AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition 3.1GHz

ASUS M4A78LT-M LE AMD 760G Socket AM3

CM3X1024-1333C9 RAM

I would be grateful for any advice people can offer on this problem.

Hi wizkid - You've probably already done this, but have you checked all the important temperatures inside your computer, especially your CPU and Video card temps ???? You could be getting thermal shutdown.

And how about the voltages on your CPU and on your Video Card.

I'm sure you probably have checked these - maybe you do just have an intermittent power connection somewhere. If you have a volt meter you could check a few things ....... Good luck :):):)

Use this tutorial: Power Plan Settings - Change. Its pretty basic so I'll tell you this - Make sure the wireless settings are set to high performance. You might have your computer set to auto-sleep or something, and something else may wake it up. Under USB Settings, Disable turning off devices. In the PCI Express Link State, turn it off to use full power for your PCIe. Disable "Allow Wake Timers."

And do make sure everything is cooled properly, as happyman says.

Thanks for your replies

I have made the changes to the power options and checked the cpu temps they are at 30c

The computer has not shut off day however, i have just turned
it off and about 30seconds later it came back on starting up windows.

I have checked and these ia no
power wake options enabled in the bios.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

It's probably your PSU's fault, if you turn your PC manually, using Shut Down, and then it turns on itself. I mean, there just can't be a reason why your PC would just turn on when it's off... force a shut down by holding the button on your case. If it turns on again, that means the problems could hardly be software related.

I remember my old PC used to turn on itself even when I switched off my PSU to 0 (you know, 0 is off, 1 is on). The first time it happened ... I was kind of tired and went to sleep, I turned it off and two minutes later I heard the noisy fans and saw the awful blue lights of the case. It was weird, so I turned it off again and switched the PSU to 0. After about 5 mins, it turned on again

, even my brother woke up and asked what was happening. And ... I forgot I was tired, never laughed like that at my PC before ... I remember later, people from PC stores, pros, etc., telling me that's impossible. No one actually believed me except for my brother, who had seen it.

I have tried another known working psu and i get the same problems still. Do you know of any other hardware that might cause this?

Make sure you have ALL updates. ALL critical and important windows updates as well as hardware drivers. You need all your motherboard's (multiple), graphic card, wireless network card, and anything else you got in there needing updates.

Besides that, how many watts does your other known psu have, because in my mind, 380 is really low for what you got going on.

Try 500, that should be safe

Thanks for your replies I have all the latest drivers and windows updates installed. The other psu i tried was a Corsair 620w from my main systme which i know works okay.

Anymore ideas?

lol bro, wth is wrong with your computer? Sell it and buy new, dunk it in the swimming pool and if it floats, give it to the kids. At this point, my only suggesting is to somehow test each hardware piece individually, because I am all out of ideas. I'd understand it waking premature, but not just randomly turning on. there could be a software program that forces it to turn on somehow, I'd uninstall everything you really don't need and see how it does then. Try to reinstall it brand new and perhaps save your items in a backup and after the reinstall perform a restore to get back the things you really want.

Yeah, man, just test each and every component inside that PC. Normally I'd suggest your wattage is indeed low. I know you don't have a decent GPU on that PC but even your Phenom II isn't "green" enough for 380W, your motherboard has IGP in it, your RAM wants power either, etc.

If you have other PCs in the same room/apartment and they don't do such weird things, that means it's only that PC, not the whole power unstable at home. If re-installing the OS, drivers and so on didn't work and the PC still turns on by itself, that means the problem isn't software related. If changing the PSU didn't work, that means other component causes your PC to be weird -- test your motherboard. There should be stores that offer testing; if you bring it to where you got it from, they'll test it for free.
