Hmm.. could my graphics card be the reason it can only use 2.91gb?

That's not your problem, that would only happen if you were using a 32Bit OS, there must be another reason other wise we would be having the same problem wouldn't we.

yes it's truer reporting of windows WDDM, I asked the same question on technet

With WDDM it is dynamic, so that RAM is only "allocated" for use but not "locked" in solely for the GUI etc

does it change if you disable AERO ??

Nope, I even put it on Windows Classic :P

I should likely add this bit of info.

My BIOS is up-to-date with HP's bios updates.. those are rare thing to see :P

Also when I change 'msconfig advanced boot options' to use this
