Windows 7: Need a new hard-drive

Often times, the larger drives spinner at slower RPM's. However, some drives have more aerial density (meaning the data is more tightly packed on the platters), so they can be larger.

If you want the best performing large storage drive, I think the Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB is a fantastic drive. However, it's going to be at least 2x the budget that you listed. I generally like the Caviar Black series as they have a longer warranty period than their other drives.

I'm probably old school...
but what do you do with 3TB as your main spinning drive?

I know buy other big drives to back it up.

That is a good point. My biggest drives are 640GBs for the images. The other's are 250 and 320GBs. And most of them are pretty empty.

I agree I don't know what all people put on a 2TB/3TB drive but if you spend that much time on your computer to accumulate that much data something is a miss.

I thought the OP was asking about a 1tb drive not 3tb , The link I posted was a generic list of drives starting at 1tb up to 3tb , sorry for misleading everyone

How about using a 1 TB drive as a second drive? Move all your games, music and movies to the second drive.

On the SSD, you put the whole system - including the 100MB active partition (if any). If you have very large programs (like some games), you may chose to install those on the HDD. The user folders you move to the HDD User Folders - Change Default Location The hiberfile, which is the size of your RAM, you may want to delete. The command is: powercfg -h off. All the other settings I would not change - e.g. I would not turn off Superfetch which some people recommend.

The above is when you install Win7 from the installation disk. If you install it from an image, there is more to it.
