    usb port failures

Hello im new here so sorry if this thread is in the wrong place,i have a toshiba c65-15c laptop, yesterday i stuck in the usb port a Corsair flash memory stick and burned off a couple of dvd's from it..today neither of the usb ports reconise anything, they dont say anything isnt reconised they just show NOTHING..twice i sorted this for 30 seconds each time by turning off the laptop and taking out the battery and letting it rest for half an hour but other then that have found no solution, i have googled and read a lot but nothing of use, have had a little problem on some tech sites as when i put in my model details it says there is no such thing....this doesnt get me nearer a solution.
    i appreciate any help thanks..

Have a good look into each of your USB ports for foreign objects or bent pins. Does this happen even if no USB device is plugged in? USB ports have an overload/short circuit protection circuit built into them. When it trips the ports essentially shut down. The only way to reset it is to remove all power, which it sounds like you are doing. Instead of waiting half an hour, press the power button with the battery removed and the power pack un-plugged. I've had this happen maybe twice and put it down to an unpowered hub with too many devices plugged into it at once. It tried to draw to much current from the one port it was plugged into.

Well if they work fine on the other computer your motherboard faulty, if its still under warranty take it back.

after much messing about i turned it off last night, this morning i turned it back on after i had put the battery pack back in,and low and behold the tracker ball/mouse worked,i put in a different memory stick and the instant that went in it locked up the mouse,it also didnt say the memory stick had been installed,so i turned off again...an hour later did the same process with a different memory stick with the same result...turned it off again, an hour later instead of sticking a memory stick in i stuck the printer usb cable and fine both it and mouse worked fine, untill a memory stick was put in...turned off again and an hour later back on with a formatted memory stick put in, same again locked mouse up instantly...when i first turned on this morning the laptop immediatly installed the drivers for the mouse even though they was installed the previous day too...does any of this make sense ?...the flash drives work perfectly well on my other computer but they instantly lock up the mouse on the laptop...the only combination i can think of trying next is to try the memory stick in the laptop in an hour before the mouse, but if it doesnt reconise it and the mouse also doesnt work i wont know if the mouse would have worked as it had before untill i put the memory stick in....never had this trouble with pen and paper...

    same problem

keithhazel, I've been following your thread cause I had exactly the same issue with my toshiba (not even printer was working).

I finally fix it today. I realized that the usb ports stopped working when I installed W7 Service Pack 1.

I unistalled it and now the usb ports work fine. But now I'm wondering, don't I need that update????

    Hope it helps.

Ops, somehow I missed this last post or I would have replied a lot earlier, sorry. Sounds like a hardware failure on that laptop. A motherboard/USB port fault maybe. It sounds like devices that draw their power from the USB port overload it and they quit working. A keyboard, mouse and USB thumbdrive shouldn't do that though. If you have an external "powered" USB hub, try connecting that to your laptop and plugging what devices you can into the hub.

If you really want to me sure its not a software problem do a clean install of Windows and see if the problem goes away. If it does go away and everything works again, keep track of what you are installing in case it comes back again.
