    System drive problem (maybe ?)

    hi :)

i hope somone can help i normally good at computers but for life of me i can not sort this problem out

i get right to the list of things happening

After about 2-3 hours of use windows slow down to jundering to waiting at worse 1-2mins for an app to load.

i checked c:\ in defrag it wasn't there !! ,ran check disk it sorted it ,pc was back to some sort of speed.

thought ok good sorted but then next day windows failed to boot "hal.dll" missing i ran setup disk and repaired boot files then windows loads but ever so slow.

2-3 days of odd few files conrupting i desided to run samsung disk program checked came back ok .

so i did an format using CMD from setup dvd clean install all drivers installed etc and it still doing this

as last resort i thought i read the SMART of drive and found this (SEE PICTURE PLEASE)

also the hard drive logs shows the RAW errors have gone from 1 to current 48 in 4 days.

    can anyone help ?

    thank you

    Gavin

First suggestion replace the cable on the drive. If that fails to solve the problem, I would say the drive is on it's way out. Sometimes they last a day sometimes they last 10 years, there's never really any way to know which one you have until it starts failing.

It could not hurt to run a full scan with a nice malware tool. I doubt that's really the problem here though.
Free version of MBAM works great (just allow it to update after install)

    thanks for reply :)

ive changed cable sorry forgot i did that :)

i ran full virus scan and full malware scans .

i also noticed when benchmarking it be about 60mb/s until i click on "my computer" or folders etc .

also noticed the RAW errors like to jump up 4-5 counts on the odd defrag and and big lock at "60%" checked harddrive then within secounds it finishes scan .

so would u say an new harddrive is in need on my shopping list ? if so i might as well invest in an SSD.

    thanks

Well if you've been thinking about an ssd and have the money, you should upgrade anyway. I'm not entirely convinced it's the HDD yet though.
Let's make sure windows is straight and the memory passes muster before opening your wallet up.
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
    Memory Diagnostics Tool
    Disk Check

All three of the above are easy to run and not horribly time consuming, so I don't see the harm in at least giving them a shot.

    hi :)

    memory diagnostics came back ok
disk check came back ok (pc locked up for 10-15 seconds)
sfc /scannow in cmd came back with poq 121 from that run ,taking into account i installs this windows 7 days ago !

Things shouldn't go bad that quickly.
You seem to have some idea what's going on with your system so I'm guessing you checked asus for updated drivers as well.
List is getting narrow, I would really like another regular member to drop on this with input before telling you you need new hardware though.

Only two possible culprits really pretty obviously laid out for you actually controller (which means motherboard) or the drive itself. I'm still waiting for a second opinion here though.

First back up your data. Don't defrag and make sure scheduled defrag is turned off (see below).

I'd try a different SATA cable and a different port.

The RAW read errors on the drive may and may not mean something - they are supposedly recovered errors. However it could be that they are a symptom and you are getting silent read corruption. In that case a disk defragmenter could spread corruption (reads and corrupts a block, then writes the corrupted block to its new location eg).
