    Cooling Fan -- Windows7

I've been searching this issue since the upgrade:

I upgraded to Windows 7 the other day. Since that I noticed my coolant fan barely makes a sound. It's running slower and more quiet than usual. Then it shuts off automatically. After searching around, I found for my model (toshiba satellite p105) There was a bios update. I did that, and that didn't fix the problem.

When I first boot, it's loud, fast, normal as it was. Right now I am in safe-mode, it's fast and normal as it was on xp. For some reason when I am in normal mode in Win 7 it gets really quiet. Then after a little bit it shuts off. The fact I can run in safe mode and hear the difference in speed, lead me to believe it's not my hardware. This only happens in win 7. When I boot in linux, it's fine as well. I checked all settings, and set to max performance. Both in bios and software settings under power options. Any ideas, any one? Please help.

When i first turn on my computer, my fans usually run close to 100% (at least on my nvidia card) and they slow down once the Nvidia driver is installed. However, I don't see them ever shut off.

Does your machine get really hot or have heat problems when the fan is running slow? It's possible it's just throttled down to provide what you need...rather than running loud and obnoxious at all times. But the fact that it stops spinning, leaves me a bit concerned.

Yea, it throttle down. It never did before. Before it got obnoxious when it needed to be, which is fine. I'd rather it loud and working, than overheat. Okay this is weird, I experimented:

This seems to be working. Although I have 32-bit, I have one of the first generation dual cores. I updated my bios, which enabled dual cores. I have a 32 bit because I only have 1 gb of ram, So I figured It will probably run better at 32 than 64. I installed coretemp and noticed there was activity on both cores. they were both running at 174 degrees F on average. I went into bios, disabled dual core now my fan is working like it was and average temp is about 130 degrees F. This is strange, but seems to be working since I did that. I'll see how it goes and post further info, Thanks.

You might want to try one of these free products to monitor your actual temps. When I switched from XP to 7 there was a noticeable decrease in "fan time". But my temps were all stable. I chalked it up to a more efficent OS.

I just posted how I solved it. Still, so far so good. Seems to work. I don't know why doing what I did worked.
