I've a laptop with an HDMI port and for a while now I've been using that to connect it to my family's tv to watch films. But just recently we got a new tv, and I've managed to connect to it twice without problems. The first time I noticed that there was something wrong with the picture size so I messed around with the graphic card settings until it was using the tv as the primary display and there was no picture on the laptop at all. When I unhooked it, I set it back to clone display. The second time I did the same, except when I unhooked it I mistakenly set it to use the laptop as the only display.
Today I tried to connect them again, except the laptop wouldn't recognise it was connected to the tv via hdmi. I tried connecting with a vga cable and it worked fine. After frustratedly messing around with it for a while, I discovered that if they're connected with the hdmi cable and vga at the same time, the picture will show up on the tv input for both hdmi and vga. But the audio doesn't transfer. I wouldn't be bothered with it so much except it's hard to watch a film over the laptop speakers, which are rather weak.
I suspect the problem is when I set it to use the laptop as the only display, as that's the only thing that was different from when it did and didn't work. But what can I do to fix this? D8
