I can't access my samsung external hard drive. please please help

Hi, everyone.
I have a 320gb samsung s2 external hard drive. I have this for only a few months.
All the time, it is working the it should be, but today, I can't seem to access this.
Here's the problem. When I plug it in, it doesn't show the SAMSUNG(P:) but only "local disk(P:)". It shows that I should format it.
Also, every time I try to right-click the local disk(P:), it only ends up to not responding.

I tried changing renaming it, but still nothing. I checked if it is installed properly, and it does.
There is also no ticking sound in the disk inside, and the light is also lit up.
Please help me, there are so many important files inside and I hope it will not end up being formatted.

Here is the picture of it, it is stated that it is RAW, does it mean it is something like corrupted? I tried connecting other external hard drives and it shows NTFS. So I guess this is not good. Please help me. I dont wanna format it though.

Hi,

Sorry my reply is so late. Can you try the following for me please:

1. Click Start Orb, and in the search box type cmd
2. Right-click on cmd, and then click Run as administrator
3. In the CMD window, type P: , and then hit enter
4. Type chkdsk /f and hit enter.

Wait for that to finish, then post the results here. Also check to see whether you can access that disk now.

I have exactly the same problem.
My external drive (Samsung S2) appears as local drive f: on my computer.
When I type f: on cmd line it is come up with following message: "Data error <cyclic redundancy check>."

Hi Golden,

Thank you for the reply and the link. I downloaded the ES-Tool and run it. Nothing happened. There was only a exe file and I run that. Command window appeared and after few seconds disappeared, nothing else happened. Problem is still there.

Additionally I found in the control panel/device manager that external drive is named as "Samsung S2 Portable USB Drive" under the Disk Drivers.

I'm unsure - it looks like its for XP, and Windows 7 is totally different to XP. The CRC error is more serious so lets see what CDI says.

Now I am using XP home. I have 7 at work, and I tried there, it was the same.
So I am on XP-home now.

Can you access the drive in Windows Explorer at all? If so, can you copy across any data you require to somewhere else - I think the only thing we can try now is a reformat of the USB drive.

How old is it? CRC errors are usually a sign the disk might be on the way to the junkyard.

OK. I am not sure whether this is going to help you but no harm in trying.

Read this thread http://www.sevenforums.com/software/190430-regain-lost-drive-using-test-disk-illustrated-guide.html thoroughly (especially Part 2 which was the real test) and run Test Disk.

Pay attention and read every Window from top to bottom before inputting your commands. If Test Disk is successful in retrieving and writing the partition data and shows the partition, press P as indicated in the relevant window to list the folders/files. You can then copy them to another drive.

Take your time to read and understand the working of Test Disk from my guide as well as Test Disk website.

Also have a look at this article http://www.easeus.com/resource/raw-external-hard-drive-recovery.htm You may want to try this first as it appears to be easier.

Hi Golden, No I can't access the drive in Windows Explorer either.
It has not been a year that I bought it.
I am not sure if this CDI is reliable, becouse I got similar result from my local drive check. Here it is:

In Disk Management, is the drive shown at all?

Crystal Disk Info is quite reliable - your C: drive has a few issues, but not as bad as the USB drive. Can you also try the HUTIL tool from this link:

Hard Drive Diagnostics Tools and Utilities (Storage) - TACKtech Corp.

If the Samsung diagnostic tools can't read the drive, then I'm not sure what else we can do. I'll see if I can find a hardware guru to help.

There is also a recovery program in it named as photorec_win but it didn't help, or I didn't wait enough. It is starting and giving "error reading sector" 1794,2691,3588 ........ It goes like this, and I stopped it.
