    W7 64 TRIM for SSD

I know W7 supports TRIM but I need to if it is working on my SSD/HDD setups. I have a laptop and a PC where both have W7 64 installed on an SSD and Vista 64 installed on an HDD. When running W7, if I run fsutil.exe behavior query DisableDeleteNotify, it shows W7 has TRIM activated. TRIM will only work when the SSD is idle. So, when I boot and use Vista from the HDD is TRIM working on the idle SSD? Even if W7 isn't up and running?

Hello 5er driver, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Sorry, but no. Trim support is not available in Vista. You will only have Trim support for the SSD while running Windows 7.

Brink, how can I have the SSD be idle after booting from it? Isn't there always something running in the background?

    Thanks.

Since the SSD is your Windows 7 drive, then yeah there will always be something that will be running in the background while you have Windows 7 running. However, this is not going to hurt the SSD.

    But will TRIM still run?

Yes, but only while Windows 7 is running. :)

Well, the way I understand it, the /7 Trim command goes to the SSD controller when records are deleted. The controller then clears the space that corresponds to those deleted records. It does that when it is not busy servicing requests from the OS and independent from the OS. So the "idle" remark pertains more to the SSD controller rather than to the /7.

So it should do that even when /7 is not active. However, we are talking about milliseconds. By the time you switch the OS, it is probably long done.

Btw: you do not want to write or delete anything to the SSD from Vista. In that case the SSD controller would have no knowledge about deleted records. That means next time you write to that free space, it will take twice as long.
