New Laptop memory not detected by windows

Hey, I have a friend that got a new 1 gig of memory and he installed it fine but when we go and open up the system properties (right click on Computer and selected Properties) it still shows as 2 gb instead of 3. Anyone know whats up?

    Thanks ahead of time,

    type msconfig in search/

Go to the advanced tab. Is "max memory" checked? if so uncheck it. Reboot

Does it show up in the BIOs setup ? Have you checked what is the Maximum memory that laptop MB can take ? Does the memory stick match the MFG & speed of the 2gb memory ?

The memory does not show up in the BIOS, I don't know how to check the maximum memory it could hold, the memory does match the speed and MFG of the pre-installed memory.

What is the make & model of the laptop computer so I can look up the specs on it ?

Or your friend could download System Info for Windows

SIW | System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala

And it has a section about the MB & what is the max memory the MB can hold

Probably the memory needs to be in matched pairs. Is the 2gb one chip ? How many slots total are in the computer ?

the 2 gb is in one chip, there are currently 4 slots available including the 2 that are being taken up by the original and the new one that was put in.
