It's not there. Nothing is missing. a 250GB drive will have about 232 gbs usable space, 320gb =298,500=465, 1tb=930gb approx. That's the way it is, i don't wanna explain why. Just don't worry about it.
Hard Disk manufacturers use the SI definition of a byte, while computers use the binary definition of a byte.
SI gigabyte = 1,000,000,000 bytes
binary gigabyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes
Hence a 500gb (500,000,000,000 bytes) hard drive will indeed be 500 billion bytes (usually a bit over depending on platters etc.), but only 465gb.
Dear Stormkitty,
You have earned a +1 rep. for the excellent explanation!! The only grouse is as the storage volumes increase to 1TB, 1.5 TB and 2TB the gap widens significantly and you will feel as if you are holding a low birth weight baby when it should not be the case!
Dear Saravantbe,
I have a 1TB internal HDD, but under D-M as yours ,it shows up a total of 931.52GB! That's the way the cookie crumbles! You are in excellent company!

Sreedhav
