    Cooling fans

    (see attached image)

In the image my CPU is idle. When I play Assassin's Creed Brotherhood I net a mostly-stable 60 FPS, but my CPU temperature gets to around 60c. Now, even with my limited knowledge on adequate temperatures in these situations, the way the number turns an angry and ominous orange is enough to let me know that it's getting too hot. Suffice it to say, I think I should upgrade my forum before my computer gets so hot it burns a hole through my floor and into the center of Earth.

Another big issue is me being poor as dirt. I can't afford one of those fancy $100 gold-standard fans. My ideal price range is more along the lines of $30 and under. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Incidentally, any other advice regarding the safety of my system based on the image would be much appreciated. I recognize that safety of my current equipment is far more important than getting shiny new hardware that will inevitably burst into flames and burn my house down.

    Thanks again.

EDIT: Loudness is a bit annoying, but definitely tolerable if it means my computer won't become a smoldering heap of my paychecks.

Is this a desktop or laptop?

Are you looking for just a CPU fan or are you looking for a heatsink/fan combination?

Or are you looking for case fans?

What is your room temperature? That makes a lot of difference.

    1. Desktop

    2. I planned on a CPU fan, but it depends on what would be ideal in this situation.

    3. About 70f (21c), very humid (deep South humid)

Look at the Coolermaster Hyper 212 heatsink/fan. It's about $30 and very good and very cheap for what it does. Sold everywhere (Amazon, Newegg, etc).

I don't know anything about your PC--you may also need a good exhaust fan if you don't already have one. A good one is 10 to 15 bucks.

That does seem a little hot. You may want to check some things first before you spend your cash.

Open your case up and make sure your CPU fan and other fans are rotating properly and that you do not have any obstructions.

How clean is it inside your case? Have you ever cleaned it with a can of compressed air? Dust and dirt buildup will send temps soaring.

Also check and make sure your fan is seated properly on your processor.

If you do want to go for a new inexpensive cooling fan. Check out Maximum PC's best of the best cooling fan choice at the link below. I have trusted their opinion on hardware several times and they have not let me down.

I am sure several others will jump in and give you other excellent cooling fan choices as well.

Those temps seem fine for an i7 870. If you want to get it a little cooler the first place to look is case airflow, the second CPU cooler. But I don't think you need to.

Orange is just programmed in at some threshold (you can probably change it). 60c is not too hot for that processor. The Tcase ofr the i7 870 is 73c and Tj Max (when the processor shuts down to protect itself) is 100c so as long as you are below the Tcase or thereabouts you are good.
