HDD noise is abnormal (2 problems, 2 drives)

I'm having two different HDD (and SSD) problems right now, so I figured I'd just group them into one post.

    PROBLEM #1 (HDD noise)
Normally both of my HDDs (750 segate, 250 segate) never make any noticeable noise above the sound of my fans. A few days ago one of them (haven't narrowed it down to which one) make a loud beep sound and then revs itself up really fast. They both seem to be working fine, but they have never really made any noises until now and I'm worried about the health of the drive. It's one of my storage drives and I am worried because I am not backing up anything on the drive since I don't have any storage that large.

In short, are there any programs to check the health status of my drive? Or should I not be worried?

    Problem #2 (SSD Noise)
My laptop's SSD has been making very light screeching noises. Like radio interference sounding noises. Very high frequency. They're quiet but I tend to use my laptop a lot at night in a quiet room and since my laptop has no other moving parts, this gets pretty noticeable. I know there are no moving parts on an SSD, so I'm wondering why I am hearing anything. Anytime the drive is accessed it makes a high frequency squeal.

If anyone has any input or tips, I would appreciate it.

For the HDD, download the manufacturer's disc utility and run it. If it finds any errors, I would probably replace the drive or at least be doubly sure you have adequate backups.

This may or may not help with the screeching. Just change the boot order. It worked on two laptops I tried it on. I have no idea why, but then I also have no idea how or why an SSD should screech! :)

You might also find crystaldiskinfo useful to checkout the S.M.A.R.T. data. I should also mention that OSS squawked about an adware called win32/candy, which I had it remove, but that was only in the downloaded file, not the program itself. I think that was probably something used if one chose to install an extra feature during the installation. Can't remember if it was a Google Toolbar, Real Player or ?.
