Have you tried new starting the PC after carrying out the tutorial? It might need it before the drive is affected

OK bobsscgirl, I'm back now, when you get back go to device manager and uninstall the cd/dvd drive and reboot the PC, windows should reinstall the driver for the drive ,Do you have a spare cable you could try on the drive in case its the cable causing the problem ?

If you click on the start orb, type Device Manager and click on it when it appears. In the new window click on the little arrow to the left of DVD/CD-Rom drives it should open up the display allowing you to read the make of your DVD writer

I am not clear on post about uninstalling drive and using a cable as it is an internal drive.
As to identifying the drive I will follow that info and post back in a bit.
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Between the renovations going on here, dealing with the freaking out shelties, and recovering from spinal surgery I laid down for a minute and it became just a bit more.
Again will post back shortly.

Calling it a night but wanted to update:
ran the malware check and it caught 5 things
after it cd /dvd drive was not recognized before or after reboot
manana yo voy a dormir

No problem, take the time that you need

Click on the start orb, type Device Manager and click on it when it appears. In the new window click on the little arrow to the left of DVD/CD-Rom drives it should open up the display. (just like b4) This time right click on "TSSTCorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z SCSI Cd Rom Device" and click uninstall. Accept the warning close all windows and restart your PC.
When your PC starts it should find the DVD device and install the drivers again check if it is now working

OK Its still good news

I take it these things were deleted?
You may want to keep malwarebytes, you will have to manually update and run it (twice a month maybe), it is a good program that compliments your Internet security.

Hi bobsscgirl, here is a link to the firmware for the drive TSST TS-H653Z Optical Drive Firmware Update - HP technical support (United Kingdom - English) It's the only one I could find ,It may be the original firmware so don't do anything with it yet ! Also have a look here TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-H653Z WONT BURN ANYTHING - Microsoft Answers it may be of help .
Even though your drive is internal it still uses a cable to connect it to the motherboard ,sometimes unplugging and replugging the cable back in can remedy problems but if you have a spare cable lying around try that one ,cables can fail

I wanted to make a brief post. I do not want anyone to think that I don't appreciate the help that is being extended to me. I am having to lay low a bit today thanks to PPS (Post Polio Syndrome), RSD (Reflux Sympathectic Dystrophy), arthritis etc. I will be on later on this evening. The ongoing learning experience that is computers is very much exemplified here on this site from the simplicity of definitions to the deeper levels of the world of computers. Ok update for the evening. I uninstalled the cd /dvd drive as instructed. Actually I did it twice in accordance with the instructions. After the first time I thought I may have not clicked on things as I thought so it may be good to do it again. I got the same result which is to say I went through the list, it showed as being deleted, rebooted and there was no apparent finding of the drive nor apparently installation of the drivers again.
At your convenience contact me on your suggestions as to what is next?

Thats ok it should do All we did here was to delete the drivers to force windows to reinstall them in case something was wrong with the last installation

Have you checked the cable and read through the info that pebbly posted?

Here is a guide to installing a dvd player the pictures should be good enough to help you remove and replace the cable if you have a spare. If not you could still check that the cable is fitted properly (note it only fits one way, as shown in the guide, incorrect fitting will most likely damage the drive).

I looked at and tried the info Pebbly posted and it showed nothing wrong, no fixes applied. As for the cable I would not want to try it due to knowledge in that area for me being next to nothing. My husband will be able to help with this when the chaos that is renovation here at the house subsides. I would like to try what there is to try short of that. Is the firmware a practical option or would it have to go so far as another install of Win7?

Hi bobsscgirl, hold back on the firmware for a little while longer ( your firmware may be upto date ) we have to get the drive reading and writing first ,At this point in time we are looking more and more likely for it to be a faulty drive , I would like you to do one more thing for us and that is to run the system file checker http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html this will tell us if there are any corrupted system files , Take your time , do not rush we will still be here for you

bobsscgirl , pooch has made a valid point ,When the PC is first turned on ,does the LED light on the CD/DVD drive light up ? ,Does it light up when you put a disc in ?

I note the running of the last link requires / heavily suggests that you make a backup. If the discs are not being recognized how can I accomplish that? Also when you first put a disc in briefly the led lights do appear as if the drive is being read or attempting to be read. It then goes out.

Warning
Be aware that if you have modified your system files as in theming explorer/system files, running sfc /scannow will revert the system files such as explorer.exe back to it's default state. Make the appropriate backups of your system files that you have modified for theming if you wish to save them before running sfc /scannow.

If you mean this link it only refers to system files.
Simply put, if you have modified windows for example changing windows themes by downloading special modification programs.
This means that these changes would be reverted back to standard windows values
I may be wrong as I cant see your PC but I doubt that it applies to you.
Should you still wish to make a back up I would recommend an external USB drive, if you have one.
If not and you are still unsure then do not run the link
