Sony Vaio Problems Hi there
I have an old Sony Vaio laptop that i have stuck some more memory in and formatted before installing Windows 7 ultimate. however i am having issues installing drivers for some of the hardware, specifically and most essentially the centrino wifi setup and the graphics chipset
the model is a Sony Vaio VGN-FJ3S/W that runs and intel pentium m 740 processor and Intel® 915GM centrino chipset
i've tried the sony website but its only supported driver downloads top out on windows vista and those drivers dont work
any suggestions of help much appreciated
thanks

Hiya pal,
The old girl will could still work under win 7. Your graphics card will install but you won't be able to use aero.
As for you wi-fi card. You could just replace the internal card with a Windows 7 compatible one. (fairly easy to change yourself)
Or you could disable the on board card and buy a new external wi-fi adapter that plugs in to your usb port. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Self Built OS Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (Build 7600) CPU AMD Phenom Quad core 9950 black edition Motherboard Gigabyte Memory 8Gb Graphics Card 2x XFX Radeon 5850 Sound Card PCI Express X-Fi Titanium / Logitech G35 Monitor(s) Displays 2x HP 2410i Screen Resolution 1920x1080 Keyboard Logitech G15 Mouse Logitech G9 PSU Jean Tech Storm 700W Case Cooler Master COSMOS S Cooling Akasa Evo Blue Pro Hard Drives 1x 500Gb Seagate

thanks for the help, but i cannot find any drivers that will work with the graphics card as its built into the chipset so it technically onboard graphics and as said intel dont do a driver compatible with Windows 7 for that chipset
i have tried the vista drivers they released but they don't work :-( which is strange as that runs aero as well!!
as for the wifi, i guess as thats built in too i'm going to struggle, not sure where the card is buried if it is seperate, so i'll have to have nosey! | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba Z830-S8301 OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 CPU Intel Core i5 2557M Motherboard Intel QM67 Memory 6 Gb PC3-10600 DDR3 Graphics Card Intel 3000 HD Monitor(s) Displays 13.3" Matt LCD Panel Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 Keyboard Chiclet Mouse Synaptics Touchpad Cooling Toshiba Airflow Technology Hard Drives 128Gb Toshiba mSATA SSD Other Info 1.08 Kg (2.38lb) |

i've got most of it working now, ran the vista drivers in compatability mode and its working now, only thing that doesnt work is the Fn key functions for screen brightness, volume control etc
i have no idea if there is a driver for them of where to get it but they wall work find under XP
the scroll lock is a Fn key press of the num lock and that does work, so the Fn key works in some repects, just not for the media functions :-( | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba Z830-S8301 OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 CPU Intel Core i5 2557M Motherboard Intel QM67 Memory 6 Gb PC3-10600 DDR3 Graphics Card Intel 3000 HD Monitor(s) Displays 13.3" Matt LCD Panel Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 Keyboard Chiclet Mouse Synaptics Touchpad Cooling Toshiba Airflow Technology Hard Drives 128Gb Toshiba mSATA SSD Other Info 1.08 Kg (2.38lb) |

From what I can gather, it is the Vaio event viewer that controls the keyboard functions. I don't see this for Windows Seven, but find the XP versions. Also the original driver sets here: update VAIO Event Service 2 for VGN-FJ3M, VGN-FJ3S, VGN-FJ3SR,WinXP download sony VAIO VGN-FJ3M/W, VGN-FJ3S/W, VGN-FJ3SR/B notebook driver and application

cheers, i have already downloaded the driver and utilities packs so i'll attempt a compatability mode install of the event viewer and see if that cures it!
also had another random one, the soundcard has installed okay supposedly, however the headphone jack doesnt work, plug a set of headphones in and nothing happens, onboard speakers continue to work and nothing out the headphones????? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Toshiba Z830-S8301 OS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 x64 CPU Intel Core i5 2557M Motherboard Intel QM67 Memory 6 Gb PC3-10600 DDR3 Graphics Card Intel 3000 HD Monitor(s) Displays 13.3" Matt LCD Panel Screen Resolution 1366 x 768 Keyboard Chiclet Mouse Synaptics Touchpad Cooling Toshiba Airflow Technology Hard Drives 128Gb Toshiba mSATA SSD Other Info 1.08 Kg (2.38lb) |
