data error, cyclic redundancy check

So I got the hard drive pulled out of that Dell, and was able to get it hooked up to my USB (on my laptop) port with a SATA-to-USB adapter I have. However, I'm getting error that saying:

Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)

It's also saying I need to format the drive.

There is a lot of super important information on here that needs to be backed up before I can format it! Help!!!

Just an update: I did a bit of searching and found out it means the drive is in the process of failing and I need a new drive. However, I learned there are programs that can recover data off the drive. Does anyone know of a freebie? Or are they all paid programs?
