An internal drive is going to be much faster; however, it lacks the protection of an external drive. If you're prone to power outtages, viruses or other hard drive destroying events, then an external, being detached, means you run no risk of losing data... given the external is disconnected.

It just depends on how important the data is?

If you don´t have any intention to carry the drive with you, you can buy a new internal hd (will spare you some money, or give you the possibility to buy one of bigger capacity.

I just checked your config right here, and by the calculations, it will support a new internal hd, without problems. :)

an internal is going to be faster if you are thinking of doing a external usb drive, but if you have the ability to do esata then it will be just as fast as your internal drives. i would recommend this option if available on your mobo. it will get it's power Independent of your psu.

If you get an external eSATA drive for backing up your images you will have more flexibility and the same speed as an internal drive, get a well cooled eSATA enclosure, a green drive, and an eSATA pci-e card (~$25) if your MB doesn't support eSATA native.

I would only get an internal drive if you need to keep it constantly on.
